Regional Flagship Languages Initiative

The Regional Flagship Languages Initiative (RFLI) is a program under The Language Flagship in cooperation with Boren Scholarships and Fellowships, to improve proficiency outcomes in African, South Asian, and Southeast Asian languages, and Turkish. The program draws upon the lessons learned and best practices from The Language Flagship programs intensive language teaching model. RFLI is a focused initiative designed to increase the number of Boren Scholars and Fellows engaged in intensive study of these critical languages, who also have a federal service requirement. The RFLI programs are as follows:
 
  • African Flagship Languages Initiative 
    The African Flagship Languages Initiative (AFLI) offers Boren Scholars and Fellows the opportunity for intensive language study through domestic and overseas language programs in French, Swahili, Akan/Twi, Wolof, or Zulu. AFLI consists of an intensive summer domestic program administered followed by an overseas semester program administered by the University of Florida,
 
  • South Asian Flagship Language Initiative (SAFLI) 
    The South Asian Flagship Language Initiative (provides students the opportunity to study either Hindi or Urdu by participating in domestic and overseas language programs. Participants in the program may start with no language proficiency through advanced proficiency in Indonesian. The program is administered by the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
 
  • Southeast Asian Flagship Language Initiative (SEAFLI)
    The Southeast Asian Flagship Language Initiative offers awardees the opportunity for intensive language study of Indonesian, Thai and Vietnamese and for cultural immersion by participating in domestic and overseas language programs. Participants in the program may start with no language proficiency through advanced proficiency. The program is administered by the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

     
  • Turkish Flagship Language Initiative (TURFLI)
    The Turkish Flagship Language Initiative provides students the opportunity to study Turkish and for cultural immersion by participating in domestic and overseas language programs. Participants in the program may start with no language proficiency through advanced proficiency in Indonesian. The program is administered by the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
